A beautiful red Double Hibiscus from Kilauea, Kauai, Hawaii. Even up close and inside the bloom we feel the fluttering of the tropical breezes catching all the petals. The blooms are big so I made the painting is big and rich in various shades of red. It's very seductive. This painting was juried into the very competitive CVG show in WA state!

For the past few years I've been painting flowers up so close that they envelope the viewer in their sensuality and rich color. Enlarged, they become almost abstractions from nature without seeing the outer shape or the environment around them.

Watercolor is my medium. I zoom in and compose from my photos to fill a picture plane with a compelling design that takes the viewer into an abstract and sensual world. I look for beautiful transitions of color or textures that could be expressed luminously with my many glazes of watercolor, or that might provide an opportunity for me to try new painting techniques. I paint the inner landscape of flowers calling these works Floralscapes. The shapes, designs and patterns inside flowers and plants are the subject that awakened my love of painting, giving me a chance to create images of stunning beauty while merging realism with an abstract sense of design.
