Description
Common house flies (Musca domestica) feeding. These flies feed on organic material, including decomposing matter, and carry numerous diseases which they can spread to human food. When they feed, the flies squirt saliva onto the food through specialised canals. Enzymes in the saliva liquefy the material, which the flies then suck up through the probosces (feeding tubes, brown, upper centre and lower left) on their heads. The flies often regurgitate part of their previous meal when feeding, and frequently defecate.
